Music Video History- By Pete Fraser 2004

The first music videos can be traced back to the early 1920's 1930's when contracts were made with local record stores for example, 'Electrola disks' as they were created for advertising purposes.

The early music videos in the 1930's and 40's portrayed many sexualised images of women throughout. However despite this being a major thing from the past this theme has continued throughout modern music videos.

The music industry were reluctant to showing music produced by black people, therefore the rap music genre had a very niche market. In spite of this in 1986 Aerosmith released the famous crossover single 'Walk this Way' featuring Run DMC, which was an important turning point for the industry as rap artists became more eligible for the higher budget videos.

In the 1980's they also began to create 'mega stars' which are artists who have been 'particularly exemplified' such as Madonna. She acted as a catalyst for female artists to be given the opportunity to 'showcase their talents' through music videos.
